The question of "what" artistic research is has been tackled in many publications. This self-referring and self-instituting question is of course pertinent - e.g. in philosophy, the fact that philosophers have addressed the question of "What is philosophy?" for thousands of years does not mean that philosophy would succumb to itself: quite contrary, philosophy has remained self-critical and rejuvenating.

Artistic research is always connected to particularity and practical knowledge, or phronesis, which embraces both the way of doing things and the value that such practice generates and includes. In this sense, we may conceive of artistic research as a domain where practical knowledge can be developped.
